James C.

Welder Fabricator
Resort Municipality of Whistler

We repair equipment and infrastructure, as well as machining, welding, fabricating — all of the metalwork, including parts that we make on site. We focus mostly on the fleet, but we cross over with every other department: parks, building services, and wastewater. We try to help out as much as we can, but our main focus is the fleet. We take a lot of pride in keeping the fleet in top condition.

Everything we work on is used in the community. In the wintertime, us maintaining the equipment is directly correlated – people need to be able to get around and we keep the roads safe for everybody and keep neighbourhoods operating.

We’re far enough away from Vancouver and getting parts, so we do a lot inhouse where other municipalities might contract those things out. We pride ourselves in being well stocked with all our material and other parts so that we can do repairs efficiently and offer fast turnaround time, like when we have a winter storm coming.

As an employee, my job is very diverse and allows me to be challenged every day. It’s a really rewarding place to work. Our department is really a small team of six, and it’s a little family here. We all get along and we have great support from everybody.
